Entry
EC 4.3.1.31                 Enzyme
Name
L-tryptophan ammonia lyase;
WAL
Class
Lyases;
Carbon-nitrogen lyases;
Ammonia-lyases
Sysname
L-tryptophan ammonia-lyase (3-indoleacrylate-forming)
Reaction(IUBMB)
L-tryptophan = 3-indoleacrylate + NH3 [RN:R11328]
Reaction(KEGG)
R11328
Substrate
L-tryptophan [CPD:C00078]
Product
3-indoleacrylate [CPD:C21283];
NH3 [CPD:C00014]
Comment
The enzyme, characterized from the bacterium Rubrivivax benzoatilyticus JA2, requires no cofactors. It acts on L-phenylalanine and L-glutamate with about 60% of the activity with L-tryptophan, and on L-tyrosine, glycine, and L-alanine with about 30% of the activity.
