#=GF CC   strand displacement mechanism, a process that generates large
#=GF CC   amounts of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Consequently,
#=GF CC   phage-encoded ssDNA-binding proteins (SSBs) are essential
#=GF CC   proteins during phage phi29-like DNA replication.
#=GF CC   Single-stranded DNA-binding proteins (SSBs) destabilize
#=GF CC   double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) and bind without sequence
#=GF CC   specificity, but selectively and cooperatively, to
#=GF CC   single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) conferring a regular structure to
#=GF CC   it, which is recognized and exploited by a variety of enzymes
#=GF CC   involved in DNA replication, repair and recombination. Phage
#=GF CC   phi29 protein p5 is the SSB protein active during phi29 DNA
#=GF CC   replication. It protects ssDNA against nuclease degradation and
#=GF CC   greatly stimulates dNTP incorporation during phi29 DNA
#=GF CC   replication process. Binding of the SSB to ssDNA prevents
#=GF CC   non-productive binding of the viral DNA polymerase to ssDNA, and
#=GF CC   allows the release DNA polymerase molecules that are already
#=GF CC   titrated by the ssDNA. This effect would be of particular
#=GF CC   importance in phi29-like DNA replication systems, where large
#=GF CC   amounts of ssDNA are generated and SSB binding to ssDNA could
#=GF CC   favor efficient re-usage of templates [1]. This domain family is
#=GF CC   found in SSB proteins in phage phi-29, homologues are found in
#=GF CC   Pfam:PF00436.
