CommentHighly cellulolytic ruminal bacterium.
Strict anaerobe.
Employs cellulosomes to adhere to and deconstruct cellulose like other cellulolytic Firmicutes, and is thought to also employs other cellulose adherence mechanisms, including Pil family proteins and an exopolysaccharide glycocalyx.
Produces ethanol and CO2 as its major fermentation products, along with lesser amounts of acetate, formate, and H2.
Isolated from cow rumen in 1951.
